About This Trek

Mount Batur is one of Bali's two active volcanoes and, at 1,717 metres, one of its most rewarding climbs. The trek begins in the dark — guided by flashlight and a sky full of stars — and finishes at the summit just as the sun clears the horizon, flooding the Kintamani highlands with golden light and the caldera lake below with colour.

It's a genuine mountain experience, but not an extreme one. The trail is well-worn, the pace is set by you, and your local guide knows every turn. The summit is reached in about two hours from the trailhead — fast enough to feel like an achievement, manageable enough for most healthy adults and older teens.

At the top, while you catch your breath and take in the panorama, breakfast is served: boiled eggs cooked naturally in the volcanic steam vents, warm tea, fresh coffee, and toast. Not your average breakfast table. After sunrise you descend, visit a local coffee plantation, and are back at your hotel well before noon — leaving the rest of the day entirely free.

Full Day Itinerary

01:15 – 02:30 — Hotel Pickup

Pickup time depends on your hotel's location. Guests in Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta and Legian are collected around 01:15–01:30 AM; Ubud guests around 02:00–02:30 AM. We confirm your exact pickup time when you book. Wear layers — it's cold at this hour and even colder on the summit.

03:30 — Arrive at Trailhead & Briefing

Your driver and guide bring you to the Kintamani trailhead at the base of Batur. Flashlights are distributed and your guide gives a short briefing on the route, what to expect, and how to pace yourself. Then: up we go.

03:30 – 05:30 — Night Hike to the Summit

The trail rises steadily through volcanic rock, sparse scrubland and a stretch of loose scree near the top. It's roughly 2 hours at a comfortable pace, with a few rest stops. Your guide leads the way with a headlamp; you carry yours. The sky above is spectacular on clear nights — no light pollution up here.

05:30 – 06:00 — Summit Arrival

You arrive at the crater rim just before dawn. The air is cool and thin. Spread out below you: Lake Batur in the caldera, the green Kintamani plateau, and — on clear days — the outline of Mount Agung to the east and the distant peaks of Lombok's Rinjani beyond the sea.

06:15 — Sunrise & Breakfast at the Top

As the sun clears the horizon, your guide serves breakfast: eggs hard-boiled in the natural volcanic steam vents, fresh toast, bananas, hot tea and coffee. Eating breakfast on an active volcano at 1,717 metres as the world wakes up below you is, to put it simply, unforgettable.

07:00 — Crater Exploration or Descent (Weather Dependent)

If conditions allow, your guide will take you to explore the active crater zone — steaming fumaroles, lava fields from past eruptions, and the raw geological drama of being inside a living volcano. Otherwise, you begin the descent at a relaxed pace, enjoying the views as the mist lifts from the lake below.

08:30 — Back at the Base

Descend to the trailhead. Legs tired, spirit high. On the way down you'll likely encounter the resident monkey troops that inhabit the mid-slope — they're accustomed to trekkers and generally friendly, if a little cheeky.

09:00 — Coffee Plantation Visit (Optional)

A short drive to a local Kintamani coffee and spice plantation. Sample Bali's famous Kopi Luwak alongside a spread of locally grown teas, spices and tropical fruits. A lovely, gentle way to ease back into the day after the climb.

~10:30 — Return to Your Hotel

Dropped back at your accommodation by mid-morning. The rest of your day in Bali is completely yours.

Good to Know

Fitness level: Moderate. The hike is approximately 3km each way with 700m of elevation gain. There are no technical sections — it's a walking trail, not a climbing route. Most people of average fitness complete it without difficulty. If you have knee or heart concerns, please check with your doctor before booking.

Weather: Sunrise views depend on cloud cover. Bali's dry season (April–October) offers the best visibility. We monitor conditions and will advise if the outlook is poor, but we do not cancel for cloud alone — even a partially cloudy summit has its own magic.

Pickup areas: We pick up from anywhere in Bali — Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta, Legian, Sanur, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Ubud, Amed, the airport, and beyond. Just let us know when you book and we'll confirm your exact time.

Group size: All treks are private — just your group, your driver, and your guide. No sharing with strangers.
