Your driver collects you from your Bali hotel. We head east, crossing to Java via the Bali Strait ferry at Gilimanuk and driving toward Probolinggo.
Check in to a cosy guesthouse right on the crater's edge. At this altitude (~2,200m) nights are cold — blankets provided. Rest up, it's an early one tomorrow.
Wrapped in layers, we drive in darkness up to the famous viewpoint. Find a spot, pour a hot coffee from our thermos, and wait for the world to turn gold.

Descend by jeep across the extraordinary ash plain. The ground is lunar-grey, the sky huge, and the volcano is right ahead of you.
Climb the 243 steps to the rim and peer into the smoking, roaring crater. Standing here with the smell of sulfur and the rumble underfoot is utterly primal.
