Kawah Ijen is one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on Earth. Deep inside an active volcano in East Java, liquid sulfur burns at the rim of an acidic crater lake — producing an otherworldly electric blue flame visible only in darkness. To see it, you hike in before dawn. It is absolutely worth it.
At sunrise, as the blue fire fades and the sky brightens, the crater reveals its second secret: a vast, impossibly turquoise lake — the world's largest acidic crater lake — wreathed in white sulfur clouds. Sulfur miners work here daily, a sight both humbling and extraordinary.
We offer four packages to suit your schedule, energy levels, and ambitions — from a single overnight push to a multi-day adventure combining Ijen with Mount Bromo. Gas masks are always provided. Choose your style below.
Your driver collects you and heads east across Bali toward Gilimanuk harbour on the western tip of the island.
A 30-minute crossing to East Java. Grab dinner at the harbour before boarding — options are limited once we're on the road.
We stop at a local 24-hour warung near the trailhead. Rest, eat, drink coffee. Your guide meets you here. Set an alarm — we move again at 1:30am.
Final drive up to the trailhead at Paltuding (2,400m). Gas masks are distributed and fitted. The air is cool and quiet — only headlamps and stars ahead.
A 3km trail rises about 600m to the crater rim — approximately 1.5 hours at a comfortable pace. The path winds through volcanic scrubland and sparse jungle.
You descend slightly into the crater to reach the blue fire viewpoint. Liquid sulfur combusting on contact with air produces an electric blue flame that glows against the pitch-black crater walls. Words don't do it justice.
As daylight comes, the lake reveals itself — a vast, still pool of vivid turquoise acid, hemmed by white sulfur clouds. Miners begin their shifts. The world looks newly made.
Hike back down at your own pace. Breakfast is available at the warung near the trailhead.
Fuelled up, we head back toward Gilimanuk for the ferry crossing back to Bali.
Back to your accommodation. You'll be tired. You'll also be smiling. That's the deal.
Morning pickup and the scenic drive east toward Gilimanuk. A good time to sleep in the car — you'll want energy for tonight.
Cross the Bali Strait to East Java. Lunch is available at the ferry port.
Check in, freshen up, and relax. The guesthouse is clean and comfortable, set in the hills near the Ijen trailhead. Dinner is available locally. We strongly recommend sleeping by 8pm.
Your driver wakes you and transfers you to the Paltuding trailhead. Gas masks fitted, headlamps on.
3km up through the dark. The trail is well-maintained and your driver/guide stays with you throughout. Take your time — there is no rush.
Descend into the crater bowl to witness the blue sulfuric flames up close. One of the rarest natural phenomena on Earth, seen by relatively few people.
Watch the sky shift from deep violet to gold as the turquoise lake emerges below. The sulfur steam catches the light beautifully at this hour.
Back down the trail, shower at the guesthouse, and sit down to a proper breakfast before the drive home.
Ferry back across the strait, then the drive west across Bali.
Drop-off at your accommodation. Tired, transformed, and full of stories.
Pre-dawn pickup. Grab a coffee for the road. The streets are quiet and the drive east is peaceful at this hour.
Morning crossing — much calmer than the evening ferries. Breakfast available at the port.
Early check-in arranged. Lunch at a local warung, then back to rest. This is the key advantage of the early departure — a full afternoon nap before the midnight hike. Set your alarm for 11:00 PM.
Quietly into the car, up the mountain road to the trailhead. Stars overhead, cool air, and near-silence.
An hour earlier than the standard departure — this means fewer hikers on the trail and more breathing room at the blue fire viewpoint below.
Arriving early means you can position yourself well at the crater edge. The blue flames are most vivid in the darkest hours — and with fewer headlamps around, your eyes adjust better.
Sit back, breathe, and take it in. You earned this view.
Back to the guesthouse for a shower and breakfast before the return journey.
Ferry back across the strait and home to Bali.
Earlier arrival back in Bali means you still have your evening free — a genuine bonus of the early-departure itinerary.
Midday departure gives you a relaxed start and a comfortable arrival at the Ijen guesthouse by early evening.
Cross the Bali Strait to East Java and continue east toward Banyuwangi.
Dinner, check in, and straight to bed. Wake-up call at 1:00 AM.
Gas masks on, headlamps ready. The trail begins.
3km up, then down into the crater. Witness the blue flames, breathe in the atmosphere (through your mask), and find a spot to watch the sky turn gold.
The world's largest acidic lake glows turquoise in the morning light. Miners pass carrying baskets of sulfur. It is both beautiful and humbling.
Back to the guesthouse for a shower and a proper meal before the next leg of the journey.
A scenic 3–4 hour drive west through the highlands of East Java. The landscape changes dramatically — from volcanic jungle to open savanna to the eerie plateau of the Tengger caldera.
Your guesthouse sits right on the caldera rim with views of Bromo smoking below. Rest up — tomorrow's alarm is set for 3:30 AM.
Into the darkness again, up to the famous sunrise viewpoint overlooking the entire Tengger caldera. Hot coffee, clear skies, and Bromo's silhouette emerging from the black.
The sun rises behind Semeru (Java's highest peak) and floods the caldera with amber light. Bromo puffs steam below. It may well be the finest sunrise view in all of Southeast Asia.
Descend to the grey volcanic plain and cross it by jeep toward the crater. The scale is hard to process in person — photos don't capture it.
Climb the 243 steps to the rim and peer in. The crater rumbles. The steam is thick. You've now stood at the edge of two active volcanoes in 24 hours.
A short detour to the famously round green hills and wide open savanna just beyond the caldera — a surreal contrast to the ash and rock of Bromo.
The long but scenic drive back west, ferry crossing, and the final stretch across Bali.
Two volcanoes. Three days. Stories for a lifetime.
